Wilmington Education and Life Skills Program – High School & Transition Age
The SOWIC Wilmington Education and Life Skills Program (W-ELS) is designed to prepare high school and transition-aged students for adulthood focusing on both academics and life skills in a small group setting. Our mission is to cultivate independence that enables students of all abilities to be productive citizens by providing innovative and research-based methods to support overall development. The program is tailored to meet the educational needs of students by aligning post-secondary outcomes to ensure they receive the support needed to be productive members of the community. The W-ELS program is located in the public school setting to provide opportunities for young adults to interact with typical peers through inclusion and community experiences. The multidisciplinary team consists of special education teachers, speech and language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, a school nurse, a social worker, a psychologist, an adaptive PE teacher, program assistants, and an administrator. The W-ELS staff is committed to fostering self-advocacy skills and developing independence in the areas of education/training, employment, and community living.
