SOWIC currently offers special education early childhood programs at the SOWIC Learning Center in Joliet and Wilmington School District 209. Children residing Laraway School District 70C, Union School District 81, Elwood School District 203, and Rockdale School District 84 may also be found eligible to attend these programs.
Eligibility is determined through referrals from Early Intervention, preschool screening, and through a play-based assessment. Students enrolled in these programs have been identified as having a delay or disability that requires specialized intervention. Each child enrolled in the program has an Individual Education Plan (IEP). Our classrooms are staffed with certified special education/early childhood teachers and teacher assistants. Students can also receive speech therapy, occupational therapy or physical therapy based on their needs. Our programs utilize a research-based curriculum and in some cases opportunities to be part of a district-level program for at-risk children. Our programs offer AM or PM sessions 5 days per week throughout the school year. Transportation is provided. There is no cost to parents for these services.
